Trash & Recycling

Transfer Station, recycling and Town wide pick-up:
First Monday in April for two weeks then again on the first Monday in October - Rubbish
Third Monday in April for two weeks then again on the third Monday in October - Brush

Please have your items out to the road at the beginning of the collection.  If you have questions please call the Highway Garage and leave a message.

The Town of Elma has a Transfer Station for the disposal of household garbage and recyclable items. Also two (2) times a year there is a Town wide rubbish and brush pickup. The Transfer Station is located on Creek Road in the Town of Elma and a sticker is needed for a resident’s vehicle to use the Transfer Station. The Town Clerk’s Office issues the stickers.

REGULATIONS:

*68-8 Commercial Dumping Prohibited*

Products of commercial activity, including demolition, new construction or alterations, shall not be permitted to be deposited at the facility.
Truckloads of such material shall not be permitted to be deposited at the facility.
Only materials resulting from normal residential use and activities shall be received (Household Garbage).

*68-9 Penalties for Offenses*

Any person, firm or corporation who shall violate any of the provisions of this Article shall, upon conviction, be punishable by a fine of not more than two hundred fifty dollars ($250.00).

TOWN WIDE PICK-UPS:

Rubbish will be picked up the first (1st) Monday of April and October, brush will be picked up two (2) weeks later in April and October.  Material must be at curb by 7:00am

ELMA TRANSFER STATION

To use the Elma Transfer Station one must be a resident of the Town of Elma and must have a YELLOW STICKER on their vehicle. If you do not have a YELLOW STICKER on your vehicle you will not be allowed to dispose of your household garbage. To obtain a YELLOW STICKER bring your vehicle registration to the Town Clerks Office at the Elma Town Hall. Residents are allowed up to two (2) stickers per household. Failure to comply with the Town Code may result in a fine and/or imprisonment.

PLACEMENT OF THE GREEN STICKER:

Please attach the YELLOW STICKER on a backseat DRIVER SIDE window of your vehicle or if on a truck place the sticker on a side vent window or the back window behind the driver or on the truck cap as long as the sticker is on the driver side of the vehicle.

The Town of Elma shall retain for itself any rights of salvage from said dump, except that the Town Board may, in the manner prescribed by law, contract for the disposal of such rights.

*68-7 PENALTIES FOR OFFENSES (Amended 6-3-81)*

A. Any person, firm or corporation violating any of the provisions of this Article shall be guilty of an offense and, for such violation, shall be subject to a fine not exceeding two hundred fifty dollars ($250.00) or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding fifteen (15) days, or both, for each such violation.
B. Any person, firm or corporation refusing to obey the reasonable request and directions of the custodian of the town dump shall be guilty of an offense and, for such violation, shall be subject to a fine not exceeding two hundred fifty dollars $250.00) or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding fifteen (15) days, or both, for each such violation. For persistent violators, the Town Board may, in its discretion, revoke any permit issued to such violator and deny to such violator the use of the town dump.

Place in recycling box loose or put next to bin in paper bags. Junk mail & writing paper must be put in paper bags. Bound books, napkins, tissue paper, towels, wax paper, wrapping paper or any food stained paper.

All brown corrugated cardboard. Brown paper bags. Box board (shoebox material) Remove all tape, staples & strapping. Break down all boxes in 3 ft by 3 ft sections. Waxed corrugated cardboard, cardboard stained with oil, lined with foam, carpet rolls,laminated sheets, pizza boxes, tv dinner boxes, pop can boxes, food boxes.

All clear, green & brown food & beverage containers. Wash containers. Remove lids & caps. Labels do not have to be removed. Put containers & metal lids & caps in recycling box. Ceramic items. Flower pots, crystal, light bulbs, mirror, window panes, heat resistant ovenware.
METAL CANS WHAT TO PLACE IN RECYCLING BOX WHAT TO PLACE IN TRASH
All metal food & beverage containers (cans) Wash containers. Labels do not have to be removed. Silverware, frozen juice, small appliances metal cookware, foil, NO BATTERIES.

Plastic food, soap & beverage containers with threaded cap. Wash containers. No wide mouth containers such as yogurt & cottage cheese even if labeled.
